What Is A Christian Sabbatical Or Fast?

Christian Sabbatical vs Fasting (How to Know Which to Do) | Engaged Faith

Learn what a Christian sabbatical is, how it differs from fasting, and how to discern which practice God is leading you into. Pastor Dale shares scripture, practical guidance, and why rest in God brings renewal and direction.

1) Welcome + Topic Introduction

  • Welcome to Atlin Family Church and the Engaged Faith YouTube channel: Faith And Bible Talk For Real Life.
  • Pastor Dale introduces today’s topic: what a sabbatical is, what a Christian fast is, and how to know which one to do.

2) Why We Were Quiet Online (Sabbatical Update)

  • The church paused newsletters and new videos for a season to set apart time for God.
  • The goal was to listen, realign, and receive wisdom and direction for the next season.
  • In ministry (and in life), when the Holy Spirit calls for your attention, respond quickly and obey.
  • Sometimes God calls us to pause so we can hear clearly and pivot when needed.
  • Atlin Family Church didn’t go anywhere—we’re here to stay.
  • This sabbatical renewed energy, urgency, passion, and excitement to follow God’s plan for Atlin and the church.

3) Why We Took a Sabbatical

  • We felt led by the Spirit of God to take a sabbatical; obedience was the key.
  • We sensed a spiritual “pause” and needed God’s wisdom about where to go next.
  • God often speaks in a still, small voice—clear direction without drama.

4) The Need for Refreshment (Before Burnout)

  • Even if you aren’t burned out yet, you can be heading toward it without realizing it.
  • God invites us to rest in Him to avoid frustration, failure, and spiritual vulnerability.
  • When God prompts you to rest, don’t disregard it—respond promptly.
  • We took the sabbatical during Easter, even though it felt like an unusual time.
  • When God calls you to pause, the “right time” is when He says so—because you will meet God there.

5) Key Scriptures on Rest, Perseverance, and Renewal

  • Matthew 11:28–30 (NLT): Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest; His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
  • Galatians 6:9–10 (NLT): Don’t grow weary in doing good; keep sowing good as opportunity comes.
  • Isaiah 40:31 (NLT): Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.

6) What Sabbatical Refreshment Can Feel Like (Illustrations)

  • Like hearing a loved one’s voice after time apart.
  • Like a recharge for a dead battery or filling an empty tank.
  • Like clean glasses, cold water on a hot day, or fresh air in a stuffy room.
  • Like spring arriving after a long winter—renewal, clarity, and strength.

Personal example: Like finally arriving at your destination on a road trip after missing a turn. (Pastor Dale jokes that Rena Mae McDonald would say it happened because he didn’t ask for directions.)

7) Unexpected Bonus: Strengthening Our Marriage

  • Along with direction and refreshment, the sabbatical strengthened our marriage.
  • A strong marriage supports effective ministry, especially for couples serving together.

8) Christian Sabbatical vs Christian Fasting (What’s the Difference?)

  • Christian fasting: Choosing to deprive yourself of something (often food) for a set time to seek the Lord with focus, discipline, and clarity.
  • Christian sabbatical: Intentionally pausing responsibilities for a season to rest in God, reduce distractions, listen, and realign.
  • Can happen separately or together; the key is discerning and obeying what God is leading you to do.

9) What Is a Sabbatical? (Meaning, Purpose, and Duration)

  • Meaning: “Sabbatical” comes from the Hebrew Shabbat (Sabbath), meaning to cease or rest.
  • Purpose: Not simply time off, but time set apart for God—realignment, listening, and restoration.
  • Duration: Can be a set time (weeks/months) or as long as it takes to hear clearly from God.

10) Biblical Pattern: Jesus Withdrew to Pray

  • Jesus frequently withdrew to pray, especially before major turning points in His ministry.
  • Withdrawal creates space from distractions to hear God and prepare for what’s ahead.

11) Preparing for the Times Ahead

  • The world is changing quickly, and some people are stepping away from Christian faith.
  • We believe it is important to be spiritually ready, and this sabbatical helps us prepare for the next season.

12) Why It Matters: From Doing for God to Being with God

  • A sabbatical is an intentional encounter with God—placing yourself in position to be restored by the Creator.
  • When God “taps you on the shoulder,” respond. That time with Him brings refreshment, awareness, direction, and wisdom.
  • Key takeaway: A sabbatical helps shift you from doing for God to being with God.
  • Christianity is relationship, not religion; healthy relationships require time and focused attention.

13) Atlin Family Church: Moving Forward

  • We sense God leading us into a new chapter for Atlin Family Church.
  • Our focus isn’t numbers of church members—it’s people being where God wants them to be so He can work through them according to His plan for their lives.
  • If God is prompting you to connect with Atlin Family Church and you ignore it, you may miss the fullness of His plan.

14) Our Mission (Ephesians 4:11–16)

  • Mission: Equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church (the body of Christ).
  • Scripture: Ephesians 4:11–16 describes leaders equipping believers, so the whole body grows healthy, strong, and full of love.
  • Our calling is to help you grow in your calling through practical teaching and biblical clarity.
