Do Christians Need to Meet Together?
Biblical Teaching on the Church, Fellowship, and the Body of Christ
By Dale & Rena Mae McDonald – Atlin Family Church
Introduction
Welcome to Atlin Family Church and to our YouTube channel, Engaged Faith – Faith and Bible Talk for Real Life.
We are Pastors Dale & Rena Mae McDonald, and we are so glad you’ve connected with us today.
In this teaching, we continue exploring an important and often misunderstood question:
Do Christians need to meet or gather together?
Whether you are a born‑again believer, new to the Christian faith, or searching for answers about God, this message will help bring clarity, biblical understanding, and encouragement for your spiritual journey.
Why Attending a Church Matters
If you are a born‑again believer, it is critical to be connected to a local body of believers that teaches the full gospel message directly from the Bible.
Not all churches teach sound, biblical doctrine. Some teachings—though well‑intentioned—can actually hinder spiritual growth by replacing God’s Word with tradition, rules, or human control. When teaching is not biblically grounded, it affects how we renew our minds and how we relate to God.
No one, including God, can force you to attend church. However, choosing not to gather with other believers comes at a cost:
- A loss of personal spiritual growth
- A loss of blessings God intends for you
- A loss to others who are meant to be blessed through your life
Church is not just about personal comfort—it is about purpose and participation in the body of Christ.
The Difference Between “a Church” and “the Church”
One of the most important distinctions we must understand is the difference between a church and The Church.
- A church is a building.
- The Church is the body of Christ, made up of born‑again believers.
A building has no spiritual power on its own. Church happens when believers gather together, because the Spirit of God lives within His people. Wherever believers gather—whether in a building, a home, outdoors, or anywhere else—that is where church happens.
“All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:27 (NLT)
Warning Signs of Unhealthy Churches
Some groups emphasize tradition, rules, or earning God’s approval rather than teaching a living relationship with Jesus Christ. These environments often become controlling and lack spiritual freedom.
Healthy churches:
- Teach that Jesus is the Son of the living God
- Lead people into a personal relationship with Him
- Rely on Scripture rather than human tradition
- Encourage freedom, faith, and spiritual growth
We encourage you to research what a church believes. Many churches publish statements of belief online. Being informed can literally affect the direction—and outcome—of your life.
The Church Is the Body of Christ
The Church is not a denomination or organization. It is a living body, and Jesus Christ is the head.
We, as believers, continue the ministry Jesus began while He walked the earth. He now works through His people by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Each believer has a role. Every part of the body matters. When each person functions as God intended, the entire body becomes healthy, effective, and powerful.
Why Gathering Together Is Biblical
Scripture clearly teaches that gathering together brings blessing, strength, and spiritual growth.
When believers meet:
- Faith is strengthened
- Needs are met through one another
- Encouragement flows both ways
- God’s power is released
“Let us not neglect our meeting together… but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near.”
— Hebrews 10:25 (NLT)
Meeting together should not feel like obligation—it should be something we desire, because we are hungry for God and eager to bless others.
The Power of Unity and the Holy Spirit
In Acts chapter 2, believers were gathered together in unity when the Holy Spirit was poured out in power.
God moves when His people are unified, expectant, and open to His presence. Every gathering may look different—sometimes marked by joy, sometimes reverence, sometimes healing—but God always works in ways beyond human explanation.
Discipleship and Spiritual Growth
Discipleship simply means learning God’s Word under the guidance of mature believers. It is not about controlling someone’s walk, but helping them find answers in Scripture so they can walk out their own faith.
The early church devoted themselves to:
- Teaching
- Fellowship
- Prayer
- Communion
And God confirmed His Word with miracles, signs, and wonders.
Jesus Is the Foundation of the Church
The Church is built on the revelation that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God—not on any individual or tradition.
“Anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works.”
— John 14:12 (NLT)
This truth is meant to inspire faith, purpose, and expectancy in every believer.
An Invitation to New Life in Christ
If, through this message, you feel a gentle pull in your heart, that is the Holy Spirit inviting you into a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Whether this is your first time choosing Christ, or a recommitment after drifting away, Jesus meets you where you are. He is not looking at your past—He is inviting you into new life.
When you place your faith in Him, you become a new creation and a living part of the Church—the body of Christ.
Prayer of salvation to become born again or recommit your life to Jesus.
Jesus, I've lived a life apart from you. A life that I've been embracing sin, not having the relationship that I desire with you.
Father, today I repent of all sin. I believe you came to earth, as a man, died and was buried. On the third day you rose from the dead and now you're seated at the right hand of the Father.
You are alive. I know now that I can be alive in you. Jesus I ask you to come into my heart to save me. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I may become a part of your body, the church. Amen.
So if you said that prayer you are now a new creation. I want to welcome you to The Church - The body of Christ.
If you've recommitted your life, welcome back. The Bible is clear, as we embrace The Word and we believe The Word and we confess The Word, we become a new creation. Your old self is dead. We're now a new creation, alive in Christ.
If you prayed here today, I encourage you to reach out by email through our website. Let us know about your decision. We want to celebrate with you. Whether it's a decision for the first time to invite Jesus into your heart or a recommitment, either way it's a celebration. We love to celebrate with you!
Final Encouragement
The Church has a vital role in these times. God works through His people to bring hope, healing, and truth to the world.
We encourage you to stay connected, stay grounded in Scripture, and walk closely with Jesus. He is faithful to lead you forward.
Thank you for taking time to be with us. We look forward to walking this journey of faith together.
